Description
The 1 ounce Canadian Maple Leaf coin was first minted in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. This bullion coin is issued annually by the Canadian government. The coin has a face value of $50 and is 24 karat pure gold. The first few years, from 1979-1982, the coin was issued with a 99.9% (three nines) purity. Later, it was changed to 99.99% (four nines) purity. The 1979-1989 coin has the design of the 39 year old Queen Elizabeth on the front and the maple leaf on the back. The 1990-2004 coins have the 64 year old Queen Elizabeth on the front while the back remains the same. Again in 2005 the coin was changed to depict the 79 year old Queen Elizabeth. The 1 ounce coin is the most popular, but it is made in several sizes, including ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, 1/10, ounce 1/20 ounce, and 1 gram.
The Royal Canadian Mint also produces commemorative gold coins in many sizes. There is a .99999 (Five Nines) fine gold Maple Leaf that was first issued in 2007. The coins come in an assay card. There is also the 1 oz gold wildlife series that includes the gold elk, cougar, eagle, wolf, and grizzly bear. The ¼ oz gold wildlife series includes the arctic fox, white falcon, and polar bear among other animals. Often these coins are sold exclusively through online companies. Other commemorative series include the anniversary year, lunar year, and wild flowers.
