Description
The Australian Gold Nugget or Kangaroo is the bullion coin minted at the Perth Mint. It was first introduced in 1986 and those first few years featured a gold nugget on the coin. Starting with the 1989 proof edition the design was changed to a kangaroo. This coin changes design each year, similar to the Gold Panda of China. The reverse side of the coin remains the same each year and depicts the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth. The coin is now referred to as the Australian Kangaroo.
The Australian Gold Nugget or Kangaroo is 99.99% gold and comes in the following sizes: 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, ¼ ounce, ½ ounce, 1 ounce, 2 ounce, 10 ounce, and Kilo. The most popular size is the one ounce size. It has a milled edge, and the denomination or the face value on the 1 ounce is 100 Dollars.
The Gold Kangaroo is made at the Perth Mint, the official bullion mint of Australia. It was established in 1899 and is located in Perth, Australia. The Perth Mint produces gold bars, silver bars, and gold, platinum, and silver coins including, but not limited to, the gold nugget or kangaroo, the platinum koala, the silver kookaburra, the silver kangaroo, and many more gold and silver items.
The Lunar New Year series of gold coins are very popular with bullion and numismatic collectors alike. The first series was issued in 1996 with the Lunar year of the Rat, followed each year a new coin was issued with the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Because of its popularity, a second series was issued, starting in 2008.
