The $20 Saint-Gaudens Head Gold Coin was first minted in 1907 by the United States Mint. It’s also called the “Double Eagle”. In 1907 they struck the Ultra High Relief and the High Relief (Type 1) St. Gaudens. From 1907-1908 (Type 2) they minted coins with no motto “In God We Trust”. Furthermore, the last type was minted 1908-1933 (Type 3) with the motto “In God We Trust”.
These coins were minted at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints until 1933. Many people believe that these coins are 1 troy ounce of gold. However, this coin contains .9675 ounce of gold. It is 90% gold or 21.6 karat and is alloyed with copper. The diameter is 34 mm and the thickness is 2.4 mm. The coin is named for the designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The obverse has the Lady Liberty and the reverse has an eagle flying with a sunburst in the background. These coins were used for circulation when they were first issued.
