Description
The South Africa Krugerrand is a gold coin first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint. The Krugerrand gold coin was named for the former South African President Paul Kruger and rand, the South Africa unit of currency. During the 1970’s the Krugerrand was the most popular gold coin on the world market. They even produced six million coins in 1978. They have produced over 50 million ounces of gold Krugerrands since starting production in 1967. The success of the South African Gold Krugerrand encouraged other countries to start issuing their own gold coins. This included the Canadian Maple Leaf in 1979, the Australian Nugget in 1981, the Chinese Panda in 1982 and the American Gold Eagle in 1986. Some countries did not allow the Krugerrands to be imported during the apartheid government in South Africa.
The Krugerrand is 1 ounce of pure gold alloyed with copper. It has a total weight of 1.0909 ounces or 33.933 grams. It has a diameter of 32.6 mm and a thickness of 2.84 mm. The one ounce is the most common, but it does come in ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, and 1/10 ounce. From 1961-1983 the South Africa Mint also produced the 2 Rand and 1 Rand gold coins. The 2 Rand has .2355 ounce of gold and the 1 Rand has .1178 ounce of gold. The South African Mint also makes the Krugerrand in a Proof coin, however these are less popular.
