American Gold Eagle
In 1986 the United States Mint started minting modern bullion coins consisting of the American Gold Eagle and the American Silver Eagle. They come in proof and uncirculated condition and have been issued each year since 1986. In addition, they are legal tender and they come as $1 (1 ounce Silver), $5 (1/10 ounce), $10 (1/4 ounce), $25 (1/2 ounce), and $50 (1 ounce). The design on the obverse is the Lady Liberty and the reverse is the Eagle soaring above a nest. Fortunately, these coins are guaranteed to contain the stated amount of gold by the United States government.
American Eagle Proof Gold Coin
The American Proof Gold Eagle has been issued every year since 1986 with the exception of 2009. The proof finish is a mirror-like finish on the actual coin. The Proof Gold Eagle comes in 1/10 ounce, ¼ ounce, ½ ounce and 1 ounce. They come in a plastic capsule with a velvet box and a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the United States Mint.
American Eagle Un-circulated Gold Coin
The Uncirculated American Gold Eagle comes in 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce and 1/10 ounce size. They have a fineness of .916 or 22 karat gold. The 1 ounce has a denomination of $50. It contains 1 ounce of pure gold and is alloyed with silver and copper. The coin has a diameter of 32.7 mm and a thickness of 2.87 mm. It has a total weight of 1.091 ounces or 33.933 grams. The 1 ounce is the most common gold coin in the United States. The United States mint has produced over 18 million of the 1 ounce gold eagles. They are generally bought for investment or speculation of increasing gold value.
