$5 Liberty Type Half-Eagle Gold Coin
The Liberty Head Coin first appeared in 1839, designed by Christian Gobrecht. The coin is also sometimes referred to as the Coronet design. It features a female head facing to the left with her hair tied into a bun and secured by a string of beads. She wears a coronet with Liberty inscribed on it and stars surround her portrait. The other side of the coin features an eagle with a shield on its breast. The eagle is perched on an olive branch and is holding three arrows. The coin features an inscription that reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE D.
Types
There are 2 types of the $5 Liberty Head Gold Coin. The 1839-1866 (Type 1) coins do not have the motto “In God We Trust”. The Coins Minted 1866-1908 (Type 2) have the motto “In God We Trust”. It is 90% content of gold or 21.6 karats and is alloyed with copper. It has a diameter ranging from 21.6-22.5 mm. Earlier issues have smaller lettering and a smaller date. However, by the mid-1840s, most issues had larger lettering and a larger date. Some dates, notably 1842, showed both styles.
