From 1854 to 1889, the enchanting $3 “Princess” Gold Coins graced the minting process. With their peculiar denomination, breathtaking design, and remarkable rarity, these coins have always been highly sought-after treasures within American gold coin collections. They are 90% gold and 10% copper. The coins are 20.5 mm in diameter and have a thickness of 1.1 mm.
Types
The mintages of $3 Princess gold coins were incredibly scarce for most years, often totaling less than 5,000 pieces. This rarity factor is what initially sparked the interest of numismatists, making them one of the first U.S. coins to gain recognition. Surpassing 20,000 coins in production was a feat accomplished only in a select few years, with the remarkable numbers of over 80,000 pieces minted in just two years, namely 1854 and 1878. The majority of these exquisite coins were crafted at the renowned Philadelphia Mint, noted by the absence of a mint mark. However, a small number of coins were also produced at the San Francisco Mint (marked with an ‘S’), while the Dahlonega Mint (marked with a ‘D’) and the New Orleans Mint (marked with an ‘O’) each contributed a single date to this esteemed collection.
