Description
$5 Indian Half-Eagle coins circulated from 1908-1916, and again in 1929. Teddy Roosevelt sought the help of fellow Bostonian, Bela Lyon Pratt to design the coin. Pratt chose the head of an Indian Brave for the front of the coin, and an eagle for the reverse. When the coins first entered circulation in 1908, many people were very confused by the design change since the change was one of the most fundamental changes in nearly 70 years. Another aspect of confusion came from the recess of the coins’ design, an idea suggested by William Sturgis Bigelow, a physician and art lover who happened to be a close friend of Roosevelt.
Types
Indian Head half eagles were minted from 1908 to 1916. In 1909, four different mints produced these coins, each leaving a unique mark denoted by a mint mark. Production paused after 1916 but was revived in 1929 by the Philadelphia Mint amidst the Great Depression. The 1929 half eagle is highly valuable, with a mintage of 662,000, but most have disappeared from circulation. Other rare dates include the 1909-O, 1911-D, and 1908-S. Matte proofs were crafted from 1908 to 1915, showcasing the mint’s artistry and dedication. These coins are treasured for their rarity, history, and allure. The Indian Half-Eagle is 90% gold and 10% copper. It has a 1.4 mm thickness and a diameter of 21.6 mm.
